GM Task Force

DID YOU KNOW…?

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is currently planning for a modernization of George Mason Elementary School.

OUR COMMUNITY GOALS:

PRIORITIZE OUR SCHOOLS – George Mason is in critical need of modernization. The focus of a rebuild must be the educational needs of students.  Any attempt to designate school land or park space as “surplus” property for other uses will be met with strong resident opposition.

SAVE OUR PARK –  George Mason Park with its old growth forest and multi-use sports playing fields must be preserved. ACPS’s goal when modernizing a school site is “no net loss of usable open space for the community.” North Ridge has just 2% open space, compared to the neighborhood average of 7%.

AVOID COSTS & NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS – The City flagged George Mason Park as an area with persistent groundwater issues. Building a new school on top of an underground stream will add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the rebuild with risk to homes and should not be considered.

KEEP NORTH RIDGE MOVING – George Mason must remain on its existing footprint to avoid unwanted traffic congestion, parking shortages and pedestrian safety issues.  A larger school with more capacity requires careful planning for safe and reliable bus, car and pedestrian use.

PUT STUDENTS FIRST – As stewards of our community recreation and open space resources, the North Ridge Citizens’ Association (NRCA) strongly advocates maximizing recreation facilities and programs at George Mason, and not including any housing.  The City should seek sites near transit for such uses.
